City Court Expectations Update

The Indiana prohibition on serving warrants and other penalties for failing to appear at court hearings has officially lifted. In light of this development and the fact that the provision was not renewed or replaced with a similar order, the Winchester City Court now notifies the public of the following procedures:

1. Failure to Appear and Failure to Pay license suspensions will be issued for failing to appear for scheduled court dates or otherwise do as instructed by the court. If you have missed a court date since July 01, 2020, call in to the court to verify your status, as some suspensions may be issued without further notifications. This is particularly the case if the case was filed and you missed a court date before the COVID-19 emergency was effective.

2. If you are sick or have been exposed to someone who was later discovered to have contracted COVID-19 around the time you interacted with them, contact the court if you are under quarantine (whether official or self-imposed) or need to continue the court date.

3. If you do appear for a hearing, you are still expected to wear a mask while in the courtroom. If you have an exception, then bring documentation of that exception with you.

4. As always, written motions and waivers of initial hearings will be accepted. Payments may be made either at the new city drop box, by mail, or online at HTTPS://PUBLIC.COURTS.IN.GOV/PAY.

5. If a ticket does not have an amount listed and you have not paid yet, that indicates a mandatory court appearance, either in person or by telephone.

6. If in doubt, contact the court to ask about your status. There are a lot of temporary restrictions in place, but avoiding problems (or tickets) will not solve them.
